It should be as easy to make a D&D dwarf who's a totem-channeling steppe-dwelling bear-riding spearman as it is to make a dwarf who falls into the easy, lazy, traditional axe-stone-gold-beer model.
We've only seen Hill Dwarves and Mountain Dwarves so far; it wouldn't surprise me to see some other subrace, Steppe Dwarves, that'd do what you want. Or if its specific to your campaign, not that hard to build what you want wholecloth.
I can build anything I want whole cloth -- I'd like a game to not put in a bunch of stuff I have to un-build first. One man's "archetypal" is another man's "unimaginative," I suppose.
